Explore the wondrous beauty of Lake Tahoe's backcountry on the TRTA's three day Youth Backcountry Camp Program with Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS). This program will introduce teens age 14 to 17 to the joy of backpacking as the group navigates through some of the most scenic terrain in the Tahoe Basin along the Tahoe Rim Trail. Participants will learn about wilderness survival, local ecology, trail building principals and stewardship, team building, and leadership! Each bring their unique experience to the table. They'll be ready to answer your questions and provide helpful tips and resources for making your Thru or Segment Hike planning easier and more fun. Come learn what you need to know before you make your way around this trail like no other!

Description: This two-day/one-night introductory backpacking course is designed for novice backcountry enthusiasts. Join us and learn the essential skills and techniques to keep you safe and comfortable while enjoying the freedom, quiet and freshness that only backpacking can afford. After a classroom introduction to backpacking, we will begin the 5 mile hike from the Carson Pass Trailhead, following a scenic journey through wildflower-covered meadows. Participants will enjoy the evening at picture-perfect Showers Lake, where you will learn hands-on backpacking techniques and enjoy a good night's rest next to an alpine lake.

We're packing up and heading out! Back by popular demand the Tahoe Rim Trail Association will be hosting another true backcountry trail camp. This three night project will address trail maintenance issues at Fontanillis Lake, one of our favorite spots on the TRT! The project will require some hardy folks for a 5.5 mile hike into camp. Participants will need to carry their own camping gear and assist with carrying some group food and gear.
