The TRTA encourages responsible riding and urges all riders to be familiar with and abide by IMBA’s Rules of the Trail. Please know the rules and do your best to respect them, the trail, and other users.

Bike Restrictions

Bikes are welcome on the majority of the Tahoe Rim Trail but they are prohibited by federal law from Desolation, Granite Chief, and Mount Rose Wilderness Areas. They are also prohibited by federal law on the 50-mile section of the TRT that is collocated with the Pacific Crest Trail (Meiss Meadow to Twin Peaks). Other short segments of the trail are also closed to bikes or have use advisories put in place by the US Forest Service or Nevada Division of State Parks. Please see our Maps and Trail Information page or the list below for a complete rundown on where you can and cannot ride.

Bikes are prohibited on all of the following Tahoe Rim Trail segments

  • Within Desolation Wilderness, Mount Rose Wilderness, and Granite Chief Wilderness.
  • On the collocated Tahoe Rim Trail / Pacific Crest Trail
  • Hiker-only trail from the eastern border of Mount Rose Wilderness to the Mount Rose Summit Trailhead (Galena Waterfall Trail)
  • Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Loop
  • Christopher’s Loop/Herlan Peak Loop
  • From Hobart Road to Spooner Summit
  • Freel Peak Trail

There is a bike advisory between Tahoe Meadows and Tunnel Creek Road. The land managers request that bikers only ride the trail on even-numbered calendar days.

eBikes

Current Forest Service regulations restrict electronic bikes (ebikes) of all types to trails open to motorized use. The Tahoe Rim Trail is not open to motorized use; therefore, ebikes (including class one) are prohibited from an overwhelming majority of the Tahoe Rim Trail, except for approximately 6 miles in the Spooner Backcountry. Ebikes are allowed in the Spooner Backcountry between miles ~49 and 55 on the Tahoe Rim Trail, where human-powered bikes are also allowed. This exception does not allow ebikes on the Tahoe Rim Trail north of mile ~49. See below for more information, including maps of the Tahoe Basin showing roads and trails where ebikes are allowed.
