Snow Camping 101 - March 11-12

Description: This two-day/one-night program is designed for people who are already familiar with summer backpacking and camping techniques, and want to try their hand at snow camping. Join us for this weekend experience and gain insight into snow camping topics including: dressing for success in the backcountry, staying warm at night, navigating in the snow, and winter Leave No Trace practices. 

After a classroom introduction to snow camping, we will head out to Tahoe Meadows to begin our 60-90 minute journey snowshoeing through the beautiful winter wilderness. Participants will enjoy a quiet evening amongst the snow-covered trees while learning the essential skills and techniques to keep you safe and comfortable, and enjoying the freedom, quiet, and freshness that only snow camping can afford. You will leave this course ready to tackle your future snow camping trips competently and confidently.

Please note that participants between the ages of 13 and 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. All participants must be able to snowshoe with a 20-30lb backpack for up to 2 hours at 8,700 ft.

$100 (Non-TRTA Members) and $85 (TRTA Members)
 

Required Materials: Participants need to supply their own food and gear for this overnight program. Limited rental equipment is available through the TRTA. You will receive the recommended gear and food lists upon approval after registration.

Program Preparation: Once you have registered for the program, you will be emailed additional pre-program instructions, details of how to prepare for the program, as well as several registration forms. After you have submitted all of the required forms, you will receive the Snow Camping 101 Pre-Program Packet, which covers many crucial aspects of the program, including:

  • Snow Camping 101 program objectives
  • Weekend itinerary
  • Preparation tips
  • Packing your backpack basics
  • Snow camping food suggestions
  • Program packing list

Course Cancellation Policy: In the event of cancelling your registration:

  • Greater than or equal to 14 days prior to the program start date, TRTA will retain a $35 administrative fee
  • Within 14 days of the program start date, tuition is non-refundable and non-transferable

In the event that TRTA needs to reschedule the program: The program will be held on the Contingency Date (March 18-19):

  • If you cannot attend this date, the TRTA will retain a $35 administrative fee
  • If the TRTA deems it necessary to cancel the Contingency Date, you will receive a full refund
