This hike will wind up to Chickadee Ridge for glorious views of Lake Tahoe at sunset. This event will take place from 4:00 to approximately 6:30 pm. This is an adult-only hike. Please be aware that the weather the Meadows can change quickly and dramatically. The hike will range from easy to moderate (there will be an uphill portion). Please do not wear any cotton, as it does not breathe and will leave you damp and cold. Stick to synthetic materials and wool layers. Call the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for advice on what to wear and how to prepare. Gloves, beanies, mittens, long underwear, warm socks, waterproof boots and winter jackets are absolutely necessary. Each person should carry a couple bottles of water and a flashlight or headlamp. Please leave your dogs at home. If you are bringing your own snowshoes or are renting snowshoes, please practice putting them on before the hike, so you know how the bindings work! Note that the high elevation level (8740 ft.) can be a challenge, especially for those of you who live at sea level.
Freezing our Feathers Off! Family Fun Snowshoe Hike (FREE)
Date: Saturday, February 27th, 10am – 12pm (approximately)
Meeting Place/Time: Tahoe Meadows non-motorized side, down by the tree-line, 9:45 am, meeting time
Distance: 3 miles, approximately
Level: Easy
Hours: 1 – 2
Description:
Birds of a feather flock together and fly south for the winter, right? Well…almost right. Did you know that there are actually some birds that stick around and tough out the cold, sierra winters? Are they a bit cuckoo or do they actually like snowstorms and frigid temperatures? You will learn the answers to this question, and more when you convince your parents to join you on a FREE family snowshoe hike sponsored by the Tahoe Rim Trail Association! We will explore the amazing world of winter and try to determine how birds and other animals survive the winter months, all while practicing our snowshoe skills. And…after playing and having fun in the snow, there will be some hot chocolate, hot apple cider, and treats waiting for us at the end.

This hike will wind through the trees and flat meadow. This program will go from 10 am - noon. Families with children, ages six and up, are encouraged to sign up for this hike. Please leave your cute puppies at home! Because it can be so cold and windy in the meadows, it is a good idea to leave very small children and infants at home with a family member or caretaker. The hike will not be strenuous, and will be broken up with games, stories, and other hands-on activities. Please be prepared for the temperamental weather of the Tahoe Meadows. Please do not dress yourselves or your children in cotton, as it will leave all of you damp and cold. Gloves, beanies, mittens, long underwear, warm socks, waterproof boots and winter jackets are necessary. Each person in your group should have a couple water bottles, because walking and active games work up a good thirst! If you are bringing your own snowshoes or are renting snowshoes, please practice putting them on before the hike, so you know how the bindings work! Note that the high elevation level (8740 ft.) can be a challenge, especially for those of you who live at sea level.
Spring Equinox Women’s Snowshoe Hike (FREE)
Date: Saturday, March 20th, 2009, 10am – 2 pm (approximately)
Meeting Place/Time: Castle Rock
Level: Easy
Hours: 3 – 4
Description:
The spring equinox is one of the four great solar festivals of the year. Day and night are equal, poised and balanced, but about to tip over on the side of light. After a cold, dark winter, we will welcome the light and warmth back as our days begin to grow longer. As the Earth makes its revolution around the sun, and the Northern Hemisphere receives more direct sunlight, the process of photosynthesis will begin, and we will begin to see green buds and sprouts. In celebration of this new life, please wear something green on this hike. During the hike, you will experience natural history and interpretation from the hike guides while enjoying the company and strength of the women hiking next to you. At the end of the hike, you will receive a packet of organic seeds that you can plant this spring to remind you of the experience and to encourage you to seek out activities that will revitalize your life and your passion.
