Be a part of the annual regional trails training in Northern Nevada and California

 

Training in a Nutshell

 

The training programs will begin with a Layout and Design Course on Friday May 15, 2009 at the Galena Creek Park in the Sierra Nevada's near Lake Tahoe. There is limited registration for the trail design workshop. The Construction, and Crew Leadership course will begin on Saturday May 16th and conclude on Sunday May 17th. Registration is $50.00 for the Layout and Design Course, $50.00 for the Maintenance, Construction, and Crew Leadership Course, or $65.00 for both. Space is limited in both classes. A grant from the Federal Highway Administration Recreation Trails Program in Nevada enables us to host this training at minimal fees.

 

All food, training materials, shuttles, and lodging at the Galena Creek Park are included as part of the training program. Galena Creek offers bunk style accommodations with indoor shower and bathroom facilities.

 

You can register online by Credit Card or download the registration form and send it with a check or credit card information. There is a place for PO numbers for government agencies staff.

Course offerings

Friday FRIDAY COURSE IS FULL

Class Description for Trail Design May 15th [ limited registration ]
Trail Design & Layout is for anybody interested in learning how to research, design and layout a trail but students with trail building experience will benefit the most. Students will receive classroom and field experience in the following topics:

  • How types of users and standards effect design
  • How the planning process effects design
  • How to establish major & minor control points
  • How to conduct reconnaissance
  • How to design for land, aesthetic and safety concerns

Saturday/Sunday CHOOSE ONE TRACK

Track A - Beginning Trail Building and Construction
Basic Trail Building is for students with no or little trail building experience. Students will have classroom and field instruction in the following topics:

  • Trail Overview & Standards
  • Corridor Clearing & Tread Creation
  • Introduction to technical trail features
  • Tools & Safety
  • Teamwork

Track B - Advanced Trail Building and Construction SEMINARS
Advanced Trail Building is for students with moderate to extensive trail building experience (including experienced crew leaders) who desire greater understanding of design and construction in the technical areas being taught. Students will have some classroom and extensive field instruction in these two fields:

Mountain Bike and Equestrian Trail Theory, Design & Construction (Sat)

  • Instructors: Jacob Quinn & Garrett Villanueva, USFS LTBMU

Wetland Trail Theory, Design & Construction (Sun)

  • Instructor: Dolly Chapman, USFS Region 4; Jacob Quinn & Garrett Villanueva, USFS LTBMU

Track C -Crew Leadership
Crew Leader Training is for students with moderate to extensive trail building experience who will have (or are interested in) responsibility for a trail project and will lead trail construction or maintenance crews.  They will receive limited technical training, instead focusing on organization and leadership.  Students will have classroom and field work in the following topics:

  • Technical Project Planning & Work Day Responsibilities
  • Risk Assessment and Safety
  • Leadership & Team Building
  • Tool Safety & Tool Briefing
  • Practical Experience Leading Trail Crews
