Tahoe Rim Trail Association
The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is a volunteer, non-profit 501(C)(3) organization established in 1981 to plan, construct, and maintain the Tahoe Rim Trail. This 165-mile, twenty-four inch, single-track trail is open to hiking, equestrians, and mountain biking (in most areas). The trail encompasses the ridge tops of the Lake Tahoe Basin, crossing six counties, and two states. The Tahoe Rim Trail overlaps with approximately fifty miles of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail.

"The Tahoe Rim Trail exists because of the dreams and dedicated efforts of thousands of volunteers who built and continue to maintain the trail."

Currently the association is run by a board of directors consisting of approximately 25 members from a wide variety of backgrounds.

For more than 20 years it has been the main focus of this organization to complete the loop around the ridge tops of Lake Tahoe. Since this goal has now been accomplished, it is necessary that the main focal point of this organization begin to change from a trail building to a trail improving, maintaining and promoting organization.

Often people think that since the trail is complete, it is time to dissolve the association. Nothing could be further from the truth! A trail that is not used and maintained will soon be taken back by nature. For this reason it is necessary to promote the use and maintenance of the trail. In addition there are many sections, which do not meet the high standards established for the Tahoe Rim Trail. Sections that follow roads or are too steep need to be completely rebuilt or even moved. These improvements may require Environmental Assessments, which are very expensive. Despite the fact that this association is largely run by volunteers it requires money to keep the dream alive. We need the help of everyone interested in Tahoe to keep the trail viable into the new millennium.

The leadership of the Association consists of a President, Secretary and Treasurer. There are seven vice-presidents that serve as the chairmen of the seven main committees that support this group. All other members of the board serve as members of the committees. Non-board members may serve as committee members. If you are interested in getting involved in this aspect of the Association please contact the office by e-mail at info@tahoerimtrail.org.
